Further to the previous announcement from the Breed Health Group, it would seem that there is some confusion as to why applications for SLEM tests to be carried out by the Kennel Club Genetics Centre (KCGC) are being routed via the Health Group and the Border Terrier Club, and not directly to the KCGC at Cambridge.
To clarify once more – the Border Terrier Club and the Border Terrier Breed Health Group are dealing with the detailed order taking, charging for and distribution of DNA testing kits at the request of the Kennel Club Genetics Centre (KCGC). This is because the Cambridge Team, though ready to carry out the tests, has not yet been able to set up the appropriate administration, ordering, charging and distribution systems necessary before opening its DNA testing service for general business. The involvement of the Border Terrier Health Group and the Border Terrier Club was agreed as a way of speeding up by several months, the re-introduction of DNA SLEM Testing in the UK.
Dr Cathryn Mellersh at the KCGC has said that if anyone has any questions as to the methods being used in this interim period, she is happy to answer them.
Meantime it is confirmed that in the first week following the announcement of the system, a total of 22 testing kits have been requested and despatched to Border Terrier owners.
